Unusual Dog Walking Technique

I saw a dog walking technique that was completely new to me last week - a very large bassett hound wearing both a body harness and a collar. The owner was holding one lead in each hand; one was attached to the harness and the other to the collar. It looked really odd and my initial reaction was one of disbelief. But after I'd had a chance to think about it I changed my mind and actually think it's a great idea.

Why?

Well, bassett hounds are incredibly powerful, big ones like the one in question especially so. And the owner was a lady of mature years who's probably nowhere near as strong as she was in her youth. Although the dog was walking ahead of her, it was not pulling her along and she looked completely in control. So it obviously works for her and surely that's all that matters?

If you've read my book or been reading this newsletter for a while you'll know that in my opinion there's no right or wrong way to train a dog. They're all different and what works for one won't necessarily work for another. Many training techniques I advocate might make you feel self-conscious when out in public and over the years I've told loads of people they must overcome that embarrassment and do what needs to be done.

I also believe that some of the best trainers are imaginative enough to try different things if conventional wisdom doesn't work.

Well the lady I saw epitomised exactly those qualities and for that I applaud her. So if you're still having problems walking your dog on a lead and you've tried all the obvious stuff there's another idea you might want to experiment with.
