Dogs And Asthma

Research into asthma has just been published and presented at the American Thoracic Society's annual conference in Seattle.

Scientists from the Asthma Clinical Research Network in the US tested the irritant effect of allergens from dogs and cats, along with other known asthma triggers such as the house dust mite.

A higher percentage of people tested showed an allergic reaction to cat allergens than to dog allergens.

BUT...

Dog hairs actually caused the greatest change in lung function in asthmatics, meaning dogs in fact pose more of a risk to health than cats.

Good news if you're an asthmatic cat lover, but not so great for dog lovers.

Of the people tested 38% showed a reaction to dogs. So I guess the good news is that if you *are* asthmatic there's a better than 50:50 chance that you're not in fact affected by your dog.

But if you *are* asthmatic you need to accept the fact that there's a very real possibility that your dog is contributing to the problem. I'm assuming that your doctor will be able to advise you on how to go about being tested to make certain.
