And The Embarrassment A Badly
Behaved Dog Can Cause You

Let me tell you a story about what a nightmare a badly behaved dog can be.....

Some years ago I had a friend whose father, named John, used to work at Buckingham Palace with the Queen's horses. After he retired the Queen, as a favor, let him use a set of her stables in Windsor Great Park near London. (My friend and his father used to compete in carriage driving competitions and had about 15 horses they kept there.)

One weekend I was staying with my friend and helping out with the horses. A man we both knew had also been invited up to the stables. He arrived with his young springer spaniel called Boss, who, like most springers, had loads of energy and enthusiasm.

Although parts of Windsor Great Park are open to the public, parts are not. The stables were in an area that was not, and they were immediately adjacent to a long wood that ran downhill to the edge of a big lake.

John told Boss's owner that he must keep the spaniel tied up as they were in the middle of an area of the Park that was shot over by the Queen's private guests. There were large numbers of pheasants in the wood looked after by gamekeepers, and on no account was the dog to go into the wood.

Boss's owner assured John that the spaniel was well trained and responsive, and wouldn't be a problem. Having had this assurance John agreed that Boss didn't have to be tied up after all. He disappeared into one of the stables to get on with something.

James, the spaniel's owner, let his dog off the leash. He promptly ran straight into the wood. James immediately started calling out, "Boss, Boss"......"Boss, Boss", but there was no sign of the dog.

Within no more than 30 seconds, great clouds of pheasants suddenly began erupting out of the wood! Boss was obviously doing what spaniels do best - flushing game.

The tone of James' calls became more urgent - "Boss, Boss".

Even more pheasants were hurtling skywards out of the trees, clattering their wings and calling in alarm as they did so.

John, hearing the commotion, realized what had happened. "Get that *#%&$#% dog out of there!" he bellowed at James.

James, crimson with embarrassment, started shouting to the dog at the top of his voice.

It was now obvious that Boss was systematically working his way across the wood, determined not to leave a single pheasant in peace. Although we couldn't see him, we were easily able to monitor his progress by the successive waves of pheasants noisily taking to the air. They were gradually appearing from further and further down the hillside. Hundreds and hundreds of them were pouring out of the trees, and were of course visible from miles away!

By this time John was incandescant with rage, while James was rapidly losing his voice from shouting so much and so loudly at the dog.

Boss, meanwhile, was obviously having the time of his life. He must have thought he'd died and gone to spaniel heaven! He was totally disregarding his owners' frantic yells.

After several long minutes we realized Boss must have finally reached the end of the wood. The pheasants had been appearing from lower and lower down the slope, then suddenly all went quiet.

James, although he continued to call out to Boss, sounded less demented. He obviously sensed that although he had disgraced himself the worst of it was now over.....Boss would surely be on his way back by now and he just had to face the music with John.

John, purple with fury, came striding over to James. Just as he began to tell him exactly what he thought of him and his "well trained and responsive" dog, the air was filled with a raucous honking and clamouring followed by a defeaning roar of wings. About 150 Canada geese had suddenly lifted off the lake!

No prizes for guessing who'd chased them off!!
